A detailed buying guide: how to choose engine-powered compaction equipment: plate compactor, rammer and roller.
This section covers petrol tamping rammers — jumping machines with a narrow shoe that compact soil, sand, gravel and clay with powerful blows. They are used in trenches, around pipes and cables, and next to foundations, walls and posts where a plate compactor does not fit or cannot compact deep enough. The internal-combustion engine allows work on sites without mains power. The category is intended for construction, road and utility work.
A rammer works best on cohesive and mixed soils such as clay and loam in confined spaces, while a plate compactor suits wide areas of sand, gravel and paving bases. Choose according to the job and trench width. See what motor tools and engine-powered equipment are and how to choose them.
Most rammers have a 2.5–4 kW (3–5.5 hp) four-stroke engine of the Honda or Loncin type, while some models use a two-stroke engine. A four-stroke engine is more economical and needs no fuel mix. Read differences between two-stroke, four-stroke and diesel engines and engine displacement, power, torque and RPM: how to compare engine-powered equipment.
Impact force is usually 10–16 kN, with 600–700 blows per minute. Higher force lets you compact thicker layers with fewer passes.
Shoe size is usually 280×330 to 345×330 mm: a narrow shoe suits trenches, a wider one speeds up work. Effective compaction depth is 40–70 cm, depending on the soil.
A four-stroke engine runs on straight petrol, while the crankcase oil and the ramming mechanism oil must be checked and changed regularly. Models with an oil-level sensor protect the engine. Read fuel, engine oil and two-stroke mix: how to choose and use them correctly.
Rammers weigh 55–80 kg: heavier models compact more strongly but are harder to move. An anti-vibration handle and transport wheels make the work easier. See how to choose work gloves.
Rammer noise exceeds 100 dB, and the jumping shoe can injure your feet. Work with ear protection and safety footwear with steel toe caps. Read how to choose hearing protection and how to choose safety footwear and protective rubber boots.
Do not work in enclosed trenches without ventilation because of exhaust fumes, and check that the trench walls are stable. Clean the air filter regularly and check bolted connections. See how to safely use internal-combustion-engine tools and equipment and how to maintain and store motor tools and engine-powered equipment.
Check that spark plugs, filters, carburettors, bellows and shoes are available. Spare parts are easier to find for models with widely used engines. Read how to choose spare parts for gasoline and diesel engines.
At ToolsArmenia you can compare petrol tamping rammers by impact force, shoe size, engine power and weight and choose the right model for your site.
