A detailed buying guide: how to choose a belt sander.
This section covers 18 and 20 V class cordless belt sanders with 75×457 and 75×533 mm belts, as well as narrow belt files with belts of about 13 mm. They are used for fast sanding of boards, doors, stairs and floors, removing old paint, levelling edges, and working weld seams on metal and narrow slots. With no cable, they are convenient on job sites, on roofs and away from the workshop. For the general features of cordless models, read how to choose a cordless sander or polisher.
A belt sander removes material from large flat surfaces faster than any other sander and suits rough sanding and stripping old coatings, while a belt file is designed for tight spots, openings and weld seams on metal. A semi-professional 18–20 V model is enough for home and country house, while joiners and builders need a professional brushless machine.
Cordless machines commonly use 75×457 and 75×533 mm belts, with belt speeds of typically 150–400 m/min: speed control lets you work softwood, paint and plastic without burning. Automatic or manual tracking keeps the belt on the platen and prevents edge damage. See belt sander belt size, speed, and tracking.
Use P40–P80 grit for rough sanding and P100–P120 for intermediate work, then switch to a random orbital sander for finishing. Choose belt size, grit and backing for the material — wood, paint or metal — and matching narrow belts for a belt file. Read how to choose a sanding belt.
Belt sanders draw a lot of power, so they are almost always in the 18–20 V class. For long sanding sessions, choose a battery of 5.0 Ah or more, or keep a spare. See cordless tool voltage (V) and battery capacity (Ah).
A brushless motor keeps the belt speed under pressure, runs longer per charge and stays cooler. Given the heavy load on a belt sander, this matters most for professional use. See brushed and brushless motor.
A belt sander produces a lot of dust, so check the dust bag or box and the vacuum port. Weight with battery is usually 3–4.5 kg: the mass helps you sand evenly, and the front handle helps you control the machine.
Hold the machine with both hands, start it before it touches the surface, wear a respirator and glasses, and remove the battery before changing the belt. Read how to use cordless tools safely.
At ToolsArmenia you can compare cordless belt sanders by belt size, speed, tracking, voltage and motor type and choose the right model for your jobs.
