A detailed buying guide: how to choose a cordless tool.
This section brings together cordless tools from the 3.6 V to the 80 V class: drill-drivers and impact drivers, impact wrenches, rotary hammers, angle grinders, circular saws, jigsaws, reciprocating saws, oscillating multi-tools, sanders and polishers, staplers and nailers, glue guns, blowers and vacuum cleaners, including robot vacuums. For the garden there are cordless chainsaws, hedge trimmers and grass trimmers, plus work lights, batteries, chargers and ready-made combo kits. With no cable, you can work freely on site, in the workshop, at home and in the garden where there is no socket or a cord gets in the way. The section suits both home DIYers and professionals.
First define the type of work — fastening, drilling, cutting, sanding, cleaning or garden care — and choose the matching tool class. Household models suit occasional home jobs, while professional ones are built for daily heavy use. See differences between professional and household power tools.
3.6–7.2 V covers screwdrivers and garden shears, 10.8–12 V compact tools, 18–20 V is the most common all-round class, 36–40 V (or 2×18 V) powers heavy rotary hammers, SDS-max breakers, saws and garden equipment, and 48, 54–60 and 80–82 V platforms drive professional power cutters, lawn mowers and heavy garden machines. 2–2.5 Ah batteries are light, while 4–6 Ah packs give longer runtime. Read cordless tool voltage (V) and battery capacity (Ah).
On a single manufacturer platform the same battery fits dozens of tools, so a second tool can be bought body-only, without a battery and charger. For a first purchase, choose a kit with a battery and charger. More: what is a unified battery platform and how to choose a battery and charger.
A brushless motor gives roughly 20–30% more runtime from the same battery, higher power and less heat, and needs almost no maintenance. Brushed models are more affordable and are sufficient for occasional use. See brushed and brushless motor.
For drivers and impact wrenches the key figure is torque: 25–60 N·m for household drill-drivers, 150–250 N·m for impact drivers and 300–1000 N·m or more for impact wrenches. Read torque (N·m).
Check for an electronic brake, kickback protection, soft start, a lock against accidental start-up and battery protection against overload and overheating. See tool safety systems and their purpose.
Charge Li-ion batteries only with a compatible charger, do not leave them in the sun or in freezing cold, and store them at about 40–60% charge for long periods. Remove the battery from the tool before changing accessories. Read how to use cordless tools safely.
At ToolsArmenia you can compare cordless tools by type, voltage, battery capacity, platform, motor and kit contents and choose the right tool or combo kit for your jobs.
