Cordless Impact Wrenches

A detailed buying guide: how to choose a cordless impact wrench.

This section covers 18–20 V class cordless impact wrenches with 1/2" and 3/8" square drives, as well as 1/4" hex impact drivers. They are used to quickly tighten and loosen wheel nuts, steel structures, anchors and long screws in car service, on site, in installation work and in the home garage. With no cable or compressor you can work on the road and in hard-to-reach places.

What to consider when choosing a cordless impact wrench

Type and purpose

1/2" impact wrenches are designed for wheels and M12–M24 nuts, 3/8" for compact work in the engine bay, and 1/4" hex impact drivers for long screws and small fasteners. Professional models withstand daily heavy use. See differences between professional and household power tools.

Torque

Impact drivers usually deliver 150–250 N·m, compact 1/2" impact wrenches 300–600 N·m, and high-torque models 800–1500 N·m or more. 400–600 N·m is enough for wheels, while seized nuts require a reserve. Read torque (N·m).

Square drive and sockets

Use only impact-rated (black, CrMo) sockets with the matching square drive, as regular chrome sockets can crack. Pay attention to how the socket is held — by a hog ring or a detent pin. More: how to choose an impact socket.

Voltage and battery capacity

Most impact wrenches run on an 18–20 V platform, while high-torque models need a 4–6 Ah battery to supply peak current. A 2 Ah battery makes the tool lighter but can reduce maximum torque. See cordless tool voltage (V) and battery capacity (Ah).

Brushless motor and modes

In impact tools a brushless motor provides higher torque, longer runtime and several speed modes, including auto-stop when loosening a nut. Read brushed and brushless motor.

Platform and kit contents

If you already own batteries for the same platform, choose a body-only version; for a first purchase, choose a kit with a 4 Ah battery and a fast charger. More: what is a unified battery platform and how to choose a battery and charger.

Safe operation

Do the final tightening of wheel nuts with a torque wrench, hold the tool firmly and wear safety glasses. Remove the battery before changing the socket. Read how to use cordless tools safely.

At ToolsArmenia you can compare cordless impact wrenches by torque, drive size, voltage, battery capacity and motor and choose the right model for your jobs.
