A detailed buying guide: how to choose a cordless angle grinder.
This section covers 12–20 V and 36–40 V class cordless angle grinders with 115 and 125 mm discs, as well as 76 mm mini cut-off tools. They are used for cutting metal, pipes, rebar, tile and stone, cleaning welds and grinding on site, in the workshop, garage and at home. Having no cable is convenient at height, outdoors and for short cuts far from a socket.
76 mm mini cut-off tools suit thin metal, tile and tight spots, 115 mm is light and versatile, and 125 mm is the most common size with a cutting depth of about 30–35 mm. The disc rated speed must exceed the tool speed. Read how to choose the correct disc diameter.
For metal, use thin 1–1.6 mm cutting discs, which reduce the load on the battery, and for tile, concrete and stone use diamond discs. See how to choose a metal cutting disc and how to choose a diamond disc.
Cordless angle grinders usually run at 8500–11000 RPM. Speed control is useful for grinding, polishing and working on stainless steel and aluminium. Read angle grinder speed control and how to choose it.
12 V is enough for mini cut-off tools, 18–20 V for 115–125 mm grinders, while 36–40 V comes close to corded power. For cutting, choose a 4–6 Ah battery, as an angle grinder drains charge quickly. See cordless tool voltage (V) and battery capacity (Ah).
Most cordless angle grinders now have a brushless motor that holds speed under load, runs cooler and makes more cuts per charge. Read brushed and brushless motor.
Look for an electronic brake that stops the disc in 1–3 seconds, kickback protection, soft start and a lock against accidental start-up. See tool safety systems and their purpose.
Always work with the guard fitted, wear glasses or a face shield and gloves, hold the tool firmly with both hands and remove the battery before changing the disc. Read how to use an angle grinder safely and how to use cordless tools safely.
