Air Tools: Pneumatic Tools for Car Service, Workshops and Construction

Air tools

A detailed buying guide: what pneumatic tools are and how they work.

This section brings together compressed-air (pneumatic) tools for car service, tyre shops, body and paint shops, workshops, production and construction. For fastening and disassembly there are impact wrenches, ratchet wrenches, drills, screwdrivers and rivet guns, and for cutting, sanding and surface treatment — angle grinders, die grinders, random orbital and belt sanders, polishers, metal shears and nibblers, reciprocating saws, needle scalers and sandblasters. Construction and demolition work is covered by demolition and chipping hammers and handheld construction perforators, with mining rock drills (handheld and air-leg/telescopic) for quarries and tunnels listed separately, woodworking and furniture production by staplers and nailers, and painting by spray guns. Blow guns, tyre inflator guns with gauges, grease guns, caulking guns, air tool kits, air hoses and quick couplers, and air preparation units with filter, regulator and lubricator are also available. Air tools are light, powerful and durable and have no electric motor, so there is no risk of electric shock or sparks, but they only work with a compressor of matching capacity; the compressors themselves are found in the power tools and engine-powered (petrol) tools sections.

What to consider when choosing an air tool

Tool type and task

First define the job — removing wheels and fasteners, cutting and sanding, demolition, stapling, painting or blowing — and choose the matching tool. For daily service and production work choose professional models, while household and semi-professional ones are enough for occasional use. See how to choose a pneumatic impact wrench and how to choose a pneumatic angle grinder.

Air consumption and compressor output

Air consumption ranges from about 50–100 l/min for staplers and blow guns to 300–500 l/min or more for grinders and demolition hammers. The real delivery of the compressor should exceed the tool consumption by about 30–50 %, and the consumption of tools working at the same time adds up. Read how to choose an air compressor and how to calculate compressor air delivery.

Working pressure

Most air tools are rated for a working pressure of 6.2–6.3 bar, so the compressor tank pressure should be 8 bar or more. Set the pressure with a regulator and measure it at the tool inlet, since it drops along a long hose. See how to choose compressor working pressure.

Inlet thread, hose and couplers

Most tools have a 1/4" inlet thread, while high-consumption tools use 3/8". Choose a hose inner diameter of 6–10 mm according to air consumption and length, and make sure EURO, ORION or RAPID quick couplers match throughout the system. More: how to choose an air hose and quick couplers.

Air preparation: filter, regulator and lubricator

Condensate and dirt quickly wear the air motor vanes and the impact mechanism, so use a filter-water separator, regulator and lubricator (FRL unit) and drain the tank condensate regularly. No lubricator is used for painting, which needs clean, dry air. Read how to prepare compressed air: condensate, filters, regulators, and lubricators.

Torque, speed and impact class

Compare impact wrenches and ratchets by torque and drive size, grinders and sanders by speed and disc or pad size, and demolition hammers, perforators and rock drills by impact energy and blow rate. The tool class should match the task rather than simply be the highest. See how to choose a pneumatic ratchet wrench and how to choose a pneumatic demolition hammer.

Ergonomics, weight, vibration and noise

A comfortable grip, balanced weight, anti-vibration system and directed exhaust reduce fatigue during long work. Air tool noise often exceeds 85–100 dB, so wear safety glasses and ear defenders. Read how to choose safety glasses and how to choose hearing protection.

Safe operation

Shut off the air before changing accessories or disconnecting the hose, never exceed the maximum tool pressure and never point compressed air at people or skin. Use only discs and sockets rated for the tool speed. See how to use pneumatic tools safely.

Maintenance and spare parts

Regular lubrication, cleaning the inlet screen and timely replacement of vanes, seals and O-rings extend the tool service life. Prefer models for which repair kits and spare parts are available. Read how to choose spare parts for pneumatic and hydraulic tools.

At ToolsArmenia you can compare air tools by type, air consumption, working pressure, torque or speed, inlet thread and weight and choose the right tool for your compressor and jobs.
