A detailed buying guide: how to choose hand tools for automotive and mechanical service.
This section features car maintenance and tyre service equipment and tools for car service centres, tyre shops, vehicle fleets and private garages. For wheel service there are wheel balancers and tyre changers, as well as tyre inflator guns with gauges and wheel sockets. Jacks and axle stands are offered for lifting and safely supporting the vehicle, while routine service is covered by oil change accessories and car battery chargers and jump starters. Pneumatic and hydraulic tools, compressors and hand wrench sets are found in their own dedicated sections.
Decide whether the equipment is for a private garage, a small service shop or a tyre shop serving dozens of cars a day, and choose household or professional models accordingly. The equipment is complemented by wrenches and torque wrenches for tightening wheel fasteners. See how to choose wrenches, sockets, ratchets and torque tools.
Compare wheel balancers by rim diameter range (usually 10–24"), maximum wheel weight (up to 65–70 kg) and accuracy of about 1 g, and tyre changers by degree of automation and clamping range. Tyre changers need compressed air at 8–10 bar. Read how to use an air compressor safely.
For passenger cars a 2–3 t trolley jack is usually enough, while SUVs and trucks need a 5–20 t bottle or air-hydraulic jack. Check the minimum and maximum lifting height, and use axle stands of the same capacity when working under the vehicle. See how to choose a hydraulic jack and how to choose an air-hydraulic jack.
Correct pressure affects tyre wear, fuel consumption and handling, so choose an inflator gun with a 0–10 or 0–16 bar scale and an easy-to-read gauge. Models with a quick coupler and a long hose are convenient. Read how to choose a tyre inflator gun.
Wheel bolts and nuts usually take 17, 19 and 21 mm sockets with a 1/2" drive, and only impact (CrMo) sockets should be used with impact tools. Sockets with a plastic protective sleeve preserve the finish of alloy wheels. See how to choose an impact socket.
Choose a charger by battery voltage (12 or 24 V), type (AGM, GEL, EFB) and capacity — charging current is usually about 10 % of capacity. For quick starts with a flat battery, starter-chargers and portable jump starters are convenient. Read how to choose a car battery charger or starter-charger and how to choose a jump starter.
Never work under a vehicle supported only by a jack; use axle stands and wheel chocks, and never exceed the permitted pressure when inflating tyres. Wear safety glasses and gloves, especially when handling batteries and compressed air. See how to use hydraulic tools safely and how to choose personal protective equipment.
At ToolsArmenia you can compare car maintenance equipment by type, wheel size range, load capacity, power supply and workload class and choose the right equipment for your service shop or garage.
