Vacuum Cleaners: Household, Construction, Industrial and Washing

Vacuum cleaners

A detailed buying guide: how to choose a vacuum cleaner: household, workshop, industrial and washing.

This section covers vacuum cleaners for the home, office, workshop and building site: household models with a bag, cyclone or water filter, corded upright vacuums, wet and dry (workshop) vacuums, construction and industrial vacuums, washing vacuums, steam cleaners and ash vacuums. Electric blowers and blower vacuums are listed separately in the «Electric Blowers and Blower Vacuums» category. For an overview, read what electrical equipment is and how it is classified.

What to consider when choosing a vacuum cleaner

Vacuum cleaner type

A household cylinder vacuum suits everyday cleaning, and an upright model suits quick clean-ups. A wet and dry vacuum also picks up water, shavings and debris, a construction vacuum is designed for fine building dust, and an industrial vacuum is built for continuous heavy-duty work. For renovation work, see how to choose a construction vacuum cleaner.

Power and suction

Motor power (W) shows energy consumption, while cleaning performance depends on suction (vacuum, kPa or Pa) and airflow (l/min). Most household and workshop models are rated at 1000–2000 W, while industrial vacuums may have several motors. Learn more: vacuum cleaner power, suction and airflow and how to choose tool power (W).

Dust container and filtration

Dust can be collected in a bag, a cyclone container, a water filter or a tank. For allergy sufferers and fine dust choose a HEPA filter, and for construction dust choose an L, M or H class vacuum. Guide: vacuum cleaner filters, dust containers and dust classes.

Construction models and power tool connection

Construction vacuums often have a power-tool socket that switches the vacuum on with the tool, as well as automatic or semi-automatic filter cleaning. Check that an adapter is included and match the tool's dust port diameter. Read: concrete grinder diamond cup wheel, RPM, and dust extraction and wall & ceiling sander pad diameter, reach, and dust extraction.

Power supply and power cord

Household and workshop vacuums run on a 220 V supply, while powerful industrial models may need a 380 V three-phase supply. The power cord length sets the working radius, and an extension cord must match the combined power of the vacuum and the connected power tool. See: volt (V) and how to use an extension cord safely.

Industrial vacuums

Industrial vacuums are built for continuous operation in workshops, warehouses and large building sites: they have a large tank, several motors or a more powerful turbine, a sturdy metal body and often a 380 V supply. When choosing one, compare tank capacity, airflow, dust class and the permitted operating mode. Learn more: how to choose an industrial vacuum cleaner.

Washing vacuums and steam cleaners

A washing vacuum uses water and detergent to clean carpets, upholstery and car interiors, while a steam cleaner cleans tiles, kitchen surfaces and glass without chemicals. Read how to choose a washing vacuum and a steam cleaner.

Ash vacuums

An ash vacuum with a metal tank and fire-resistant filter is designed for cold ash from fireplaces, stoves and barbecues. Check for a metal hose and a heat-resistant filter, and never collect hot or smouldering ash. See essential fire safety rules.

Hose, nozzles and noise

Hose diameter and length and the nozzle set (floor, crevice and upholstery tools) determine how easily you can clean different surfaces. For living spaces, also compare the noise level. Read what is noise level in db.

Maintenance and safety

Clean or replace the filter regularly, empty the container in time, dry the tank after wet cleaning, and do not pick up hot ash, flammable liquids or sharp objects unless the manufacturer allows it. Learn more: how to maintain a vacuum cleaner: filter cleaning and safe use and essential power tool safety rules.

At ToolsArmenia you can compare vacuum cleaners by type, power, dust container, filtration and power supply and choose the right model for your home, workshop or building site.
