A detailed buying guide: how to choose a hand saw.
Hand saws are used to cut wood, boards, laminate, metal pipes and profiles, plastic, plasterboard and aerated concrete. This section includes wood saws, hacksaws, narrow plasterboard saws, aerated concrete saws and replacement blades. General guide to cutting tools: how to choose hand saws, knives, snips, files and scrapers.
A wood saw has large teeth, a hacksaw has a frame and a thin blade, a plasterboard saw has a narrow pointed blade for cut-outs, and an aerated concrete saw has carbide teeth.
Large teeth (3-5 TPI) cut fast, while fine teeth (7-12 TPI) give a clean cut. For metal, 18-32 TPI blades are chosen by wall thickness.
A 400-450 mm blade is universal, 500-550 mm suits thick boards and logs, and short saws are for working in tight spaces.
Induction-hardened teeth stay sharp for a long time but cannot be resharpened, while ordinary teeth can be sharpened. For hacksaws, easy blade tensioning matters. Read hand tool materials, hardness, coatings and ergonomics.
For curved cuts and large volumes, an electric jigsaw is faster: how to choose an electric jigsaw.
Secure the workpiece in a vice or clamp, keep your hand away from the cutting line, and store the saw with a tooth guard. Read how to use hand tools safely.
