A detailed buying guide: how to choose pliers.
Pliers are used to grip, bend, turn and crimp wire, small parts and pipes in electrical work, plumbing, car service and around the home. This section covers combination pliers, long nose pliers, groove-joint pliers, locking pliers and circlip pliers. The types are separated by a filter. General guide: how to choose pliers, cutters, strippers and crimping tools.
Combination pliers grip and cut, long nose pliers work in tight spaces, groove-joint pliers adjust to the size of a pipe or nut, locking pliers clamp onto a part, and circlip pliers fit and remove retaining rings. Choose according to your main task.
A length of 160-180 mm is universal, 200 mm and more give greater force, and short models suit electronics. For groove-joint pliers, the maximum jaw opening also matters.
Serrated jaws hold round parts securely, and a hardened cutting edge should cut wire cleanly without crushing it. Check that there is no gap between the jaws when closed.
For live electrical work, choose VDE 1000 V insulated pliers rather than models with ordinary rubber grips. More: how to choose insulated hand tools for electrical work.
Chrome vanadium or carbon steel withstands heavy loads, and two-component handles do not slip and are less tiring. Read hand tool materials, hardness, coatings and ergonomics.
Do not use pliers as a wrench or hammer, and do not cut hardened wire with them. After work, clean and oil the pivot: how to maintain, store and organize hand tools.
