Stairs: Stepladders, Multi-Section and Hinged Ladders for Home, Construction and Warehouse

Stairs

A detailed buying guide: how to choose a ladder or work platform.

This section features ladders for home renovation, construction, electrical installation, warehouses and workshops. For low and medium heights there are step stools and double-sided stepladders with a platform, while facades, roofs and high ceilings are covered by single-section leaning ladders, two- and three-section combination ladders, multi-purpose hinged ladders and telescopic ladders. They are used by tradespeople, electricians, painters and homeowners whenever they need to reach working height safely and steadily. Hand tools and protective accessories for work at height are found in other relevant sections of the site.

What to consider when choosing a ladder

Ladder type and purpose

Stepladders and step stools suit indoor work, leaning and multi-section ladders suit work against a wall, and hinged multi-purpose ladders suit changing tasks and stairwells. Clear the work area in advance and provide a level, firm base. See how to organize a safe workplace.

Working height and number of steps

Stepladders usually have 3–12 steps, while extended multi-section ladders reach about 5–12 m. Working height is roughly the height of the highest permitted step plus about 1.8–2 m, so choose with a small margin. Read how to choose a fall protection system.

Load capacity and marking

Household ladders are usually rated for a maximum load of 100–120 kg and professional ones for 150 kg or more, including the weight of the user, tools and materials. Check the label for load rating, use class and EN 131 marking. See how to read PPE markings, standards and replacement requirements.

Material and construction

Aluminium ladders are light and rust-free, steel ones are heavier but sturdy, and fibreglass (dielectric) ladders are needed when working near electrical equipment. Check the profile thickness, how the steps are fixed (flared or riveted) and the quality of the hinges. Read how to choose personal protective equipment.

Stability and feet

Choose ladders with non-slip rubber feet, a widened base or stabiliser bar, and opening locks or a safety strap. A wide platform and steps 8–12 cm deep reduce leg fatigue, and you should climb only in footwear with non-slip soles. See how to choose safety footwear and protective rubber boots.

Safe work at height

Set a leaning ladder at an angle of about 75°, keep three points of contact and never stand on the top two steps. Secure tools with tethers so they cannot fall, and people below should wear helmets. Read how to choose knee pads, tool tethers and auxiliary protective accessories and how to choose safety helmets, head protection and accessories.

Inspection and maintenance

Before each use, check hinges, locks, steps and feet for cracks, deformation and wear. Replace damaged feet, and stop using a ladder with a bent profile. See how to inspect a tool before use.

At ToolsArmenia you can compare ladders by type, working height, number of steps, load capacity and material and choose the right ladder for your job.
