A detailed buying guide: how to choose a utility knife.
Knives are used to cut cardboard, plasterboard, linoleum, film, cable insulation and packaging. This section includes snap-off knives (9, 18 and 25 mm), folding and fixed-blade utility knives, and replacement blades. General guide to cutting tools: how to choose hand saws, knives, snips, files and scrapers.
A snap-off knife quickly restores its edge when you break off the blunt segment, a folding knife is compact and safe, and a fixed-blade utility knife stays stable on heavy cuts.
A 9 mm blade suits paper and precise work, 18 mm is universal, and 25 mm cuts thick linoleum, rubber and insulation materials.
A metal or reinforced body does not flex, and a screw or auto lock stops the blade sliding back during a cut. A rubberised grip does not slip.
Blades made of SK2 and SK5 carbon steel stay sharp longer, and black blades are sharper. About materials: hand tool materials, hardness, coatings and ergonomics.
Check that the blades match the width of the knife and keep a spare pack. Some knives store spare blades inside the handle.
Cut away from your body, do not extend the blade further than needed and dispose of snapped-off segments in a safe container. Read how to use hand tools safely, and about gloves: how to choose work gloves.
At ToolsArmenia you can choose a knife and blades by type, width, body and steel.
