Electric Generators and Accessories: Backup Power for Home, Shop and Construction Site

Electric generators and accessories

A detailed buying guide: how to choose a gasoline generator.

This section brings together electric generators and their accessories for backup or off-grid power at home, in a country house, shop, construction site or workshop. Besides generators, there are automatic transfer switches (ATS) that start the generator and transfer the load when the mains fails, as well as wheel and handle sets for moving heavy models easily. For maintenance there are oils and lubricants, and for electric-start models — rechargeable batteries. Portable power stations, voltage stabilizers and UPS units are found in other sections (see how to choose a portable power station).

What to consider when choosing a generator and accessories

Generator type and purpose

Petrol generators suit home use and occasional backup power, diesel ones long continuous work and construction sites, while inverter generators deliver stable voltage for sensitive electronics and run more quietly. Choose the type by run time, load and noise requirements. See how to choose a diesel generator and how to choose an inverter generator.

Power and reserve

Add up the power of all appliances running at the same time and allow for starting currents: for pumps, compressors, fridges and power tools they can be 2–3 times the rated value. The rated, not maximum, generator output should have a margin of about 20–30 %. Read how to calculate required generator power.

Phases and outlets

Single-phase 230 V generators suit household appliances and tools, while three-phase 400 V models are for three-phase motors, machines and construction sites. Check the number and type of sockets, a 12 V output and the circuit breakers. See differences between single-phase and three-phase generators.

Voltage stability and AVR

An automatic voltage regulator (AVR) keeps the output voltage within about ±1–3 % and protects boilers, computers and TVs. For sensitive electronics choose a model with AVR or an inverter generator. Read what is an AVR system.

Auto start and ATS

An electric-start generator can be connected to an ATS that starts the generator automatically when the mains fails and returns the load to the grid once power is restored. Choose the ATS by number of phases, current and compatibility with the generator model, and have it installed by an electrician. See what is an ATS system.

Oils, fuel and maintenance

For four-stroke engines use oil of the grade recommended by the manufacturer (often SAE 10W-30 or 10W-40), make the first change after about 20–50 hours and then every 50–100 hours. Clean the air filter regularly, check the spark plug and drain the fuel before long storage. Read how to store and maintain a generator and fuel, engine oil and two-stroke mix: how to choose and use them correctly.

Battery, wheels and spare parts

Electric-start models need a 12 V battery whose capacity and size match the generator, while a wheel and handle set makes it easier to move models weighing 40–100 kg or more. Choose accessories and spare parts by model and serial number. See how to choose generator spare parts: AVR, stator, rotor, starting and control components.

Safe operation

Run the generator only in an open, well-ventilated place away from windows and doors, as the exhaust contains carbon monoxide. Never connect a generator to the house wiring without an ATS or changeover switch, earth it and never refuel a hot engine. Read how to use a generator safely.

At ToolsArmenia you can compare generators and accessories by type, power, phases, starting method and compatibility and choose the right solution for your power supply needs.
