A detailed buying guide: how to choose a socket.
Sockets and socket wrenches work in deep and narrow places where an open-end spanner cannot reach. This section includes 1/2" drive hex sockets, extensions and a universal joint, T-, Y- and L-handle socket wrenches and cross wheel wrenches. General guide: how to choose wrenches, sockets, ratchets and torque tools.
The square drive of the socket (1/4", 3/8", 1/2") must match the ratchet or impact wrench. 1/2" is the most common in car service.
Choose the socket size in mm to match the nut. A six-point socket grips better and does not round the flats.
A T-handle wrench gives fast spinning and good leverage, a Y-wrench combines three sizes, and L-handle and cross wrenches suit wheel nuts. About car service: how to choose hand tools for automotive and mechanical service.
