Pickaxes for Breaking Stony Ground, Asphalt and Roots

Pickaxes

A detailed buying guide: how to choose a pickaxe.

Pickaxes are used to break up stony and clay soil, asphalt, frozen ground and old concrete, cut through roots and dig foundation holes. This section includes double-ended pickaxes with a pointed tip and a flat blade, mattocks and light garden picks. To remove the loosened soil you need a shovel: how to choose a shovel.

What to consider when choosing a pickaxe

Pickaxe type

The pointed end breaks stone and dense soil, while the wide blade cuts roots and loosens earth. A mattock has a hoe on one side and an axe on the other and suits root-filled ground.

Head weight

A heavy head (2-3 kg) strikes asphalt and stone harder, while a light one (1-1.5 kg) suits garden work and long sessions. Choose a weight you can lift without losing control.

Steel

The head should be made of hardened or forged steel so the tip does not blunt or crack. A hardened tip can be resharpened, while soft steel quickly deforms on stone.

Handle

A fibreglass handle absorbs vibration and does not rot, while a wooden one is traditional and easy to replace. Check that the head is firmly wedged and does not loosen from repeated blows.

Eye protection

Fragments of stone and asphalt can fly off at high speed, so wear safety glasses: how to choose safety glasses. Keep other people away and direct each blow away from your feet.

Protective equipment

For heavy work you also need gloves and sturdy footwear with steel toecaps. About choosing personal protective equipment: how to choose personal protective equipment.

At ToolsArmenia you can choose a pickaxe by type, head weight, steel and handle for stony ground, roots and asphalt.
