A detailed buying guide: how to choose a pruning saw.
Pruning saws are used to cut thick tree branches, deadwood, roots and shrubs where loppers are no longer enough. This section includes folding saws, pruning saws with straight and curved blades, bow saws and saws that mount on a pole. For branches up to 50 mm, loppers are quicker: how to choose loppers.
A folding saw is compact and safe to carry, a straight-blade saw suits thick branches, and a bow saw is for firewood and dry trunks. A pole saw lets you cut high branches from the ground.
A curved blade feeds itself into the wood on the pull stroke and is convenient when working overhead. Hardened triple-ground teeth cut in both directions, and a pull saw gives a clean cut with little effort.
A short blade (18-25 cm) is convenient in dense shrubs, while a long one (30-40 cm) suits thick branches and trunks. As a rule of thumb, the blade should be at least twice as long as the branch diameter.
A rubberised grip does not slip in a damp hand, and the lock on a folding saw must hold the blade securely both open and closed. A replaceable blade extends the life of the saw.
Cut a thick branch in three steps: first from below, then from above, and finally remove the stub at the branch collar so the bark does not tear. For large jobs, consider a petrol pole pruner: how to choose a petrol trimmer, brushcutter, hedge trimmer and pole pruner.
When sawing overhead, sawdust and bark fall onto your face, so wear safety glasses: how to choose safety glasses. Do not stand under the branch being cut, and close the folding saw after every use.
At ToolsArmenia you can choose a pruning saw by type, blade, teeth and length for branches, deadwood and roots.
