A detailed buying guide: how to choose loppers.
Loppers are long-handled shears that cut branches 25-50 mm thick that pruning shears cannot handle. This section includes bypass and anvil loppers, ratchet and compound-lever models, loppers with telescopic handles and manual pole pruners. For thin branches, pruning shears are more convenient: how to choose pruning shears.
Bypass loppers cut live branches cleanly, while anvil loppers cope more easily with dry, hard wood. Ratchet and compound-lever mechanisms multiply your force several times and suit thick branches.
Check the maximum diameter stated by the manufacturer and do not exceed it, or the blades will bend. For branches thicker than 50 mm, use a pruning saw: how to choose a pruning saw.
Long handles increase leverage and let you reach high and deep branches, but the tool becomes heavier. A model with telescopic handles works for both shrubs and trees.
Aluminium and fibreglass handles are light and do not tire your arms when working overhead. Steel handles are stronger but heavier. Rubber bumpers soften the impact at the end of each cut.
A hardened steel blade with a non-stick coating resists sap build-up and stays sharp for a long time. A curved blade holds the branch and stops it slipping during the cut.
Stand firmly, do not cut branches directly above your head and watch where the cut branch will fall. Do not work near power lines. General rules: how to use hand tools safely.
At ToolsArmenia you can choose loppers by mechanism, cutting diameter, handle length and weight for trees and shrubs.
